GLASGOW HERALD
4 DECEMBER 1882
SALTCOATS – WATER SUPPLY
The Ardrossan Gas and Water Company have now given their reply to the inquiry of the Local Authority as to the terms on which they will supply Saltcoats with water.
The directors of the company propose that if the Local Authorities for Stevenston and Saltcoats will agree to take the supply for 25 years the company will construct a new reservoir at Busbie, and lay pipes from the filters at Whitlees through the town of Saltcoats – the rate for the water for domestic use to be 1s per £1 on the gross valuation, less 5 per cent; the Local Authorities to buy the pipes at the expiration of the agreement if a new arrangement is not then entered into.
The directors cannot recommend the company to offer a supply for the town of Stevenston.

GLASGOW HERALD
5 DECEMBER 1939
THEFT OF LIQUOR FROM AYRSHIRE HOTEL
How police officers hid themselves in the wine cellar of the Eglinton Arms Hotel, Kilwinning, and caught a man in the act of stealing liquor was described at Ayr Sheriff Court yesterday.
JOSEPH POTTS JACKSON, (25), explosives worker, 3 Arnott Place, Saltcoats, appeared before Sheriff Menzies, and admitted having on December 3, while acting in concert with another man, broken into the wine cellar and stolen four quart bottles of gin and six quart bottles of rum.
He admitted two previous convictions.
The other man denied the charge, and a date for trial was fixed.
It was stated that the proprietrix of the hotel found that the lock of the cellar had been forced, and some liquor was missing. She suspected the accused. She informed the police, and two constables hid themselves in the cellar. The proprietrix then announced in the hearing of Jackson that she was going out for a short time. Shortly afterwards the police saw the door of the cellar open, and Jackson enter. When he was about to leave he was apprehended. He had some of the bottles in his possession.
Sheriff Menzies sentenced him to 30 days imprisonment.

Re: Saltcoats - On This Day In History
Meekan,
It was a fraudulent scheme whereby a member of the criminal fraternity received, for example, a genuine £5 note in their change from a shopkeeper, immediately protesting that the said £5 note was counterfeit, and by sleight of hand, actually handed back a counterfeit £5 note in return for another genuine one from an apologetic shopkeeper.
When the shopkeeper then took the counterfeit £5 note to the police station there was usually a queue of other shopkeepers all describing the same customer .

The apes have the upper hand in the new society which exists primitively but peacefully in Eden-like surroundings. In " Battle for the Planet of the Apes " ( all week ) the leader, Caesar ( Roddy McDowall ) discovers that there is a chance that a videotaped interview with his parents may exist in the ruins of a nearby city destroyed by the nuclear attack. Caesar and several colleagues travel to the city which, they discover, is still inhabited by some humans , grotesquely scarred and weakened by radiation. Caesar and his companions manage to escape an attack by these mutants and return to Ape City. Kolp ( Severn Darden ) then leads the mutants in an attack on the city. Caesar holds off these threats to his civilisation and ultimately restores the principles of humanity which makes it possible for ape and man to live together .

Also Deadly Trap ( A ) 6.45 pm
Sunday 9th December and all week

Also Sex in The Office ( X ) 7pm
An eight-strong acting team move into a deserted theatre to rehearse for their own production - " The Flesh and Blood Show " ( all week ). The show never goes on view to the public, but the flesh and blood never stop... but whose flesh and blood is the question troubling the mystified police and terrified surviving members of the group. When John ( David Howey ) is discovered to be missing, suspicion falls on him but when his body is fished out of the sea the police admit they have made a mistake and start looking for a new suspect. The spotlight finally falls on a previous actor who during the war starred in a production of " Othello " and whose fellow actors disappeared suddenly and without trace. It is hoped that if the rehearsals carry on the murderer will reveal himself. Together the cast and police improvise the story in a final attempt to discover the true culprit.
The claim about the comfortable heating in the cinemas reminds us that this was the period of the power crisis caused by the miners' strike; the three-day week was just around the corner.
