SALTCOATS MISSION COAST HOME

The annual meeting of the Saltcoats Mission Coast Home, which includes the Convalescent Home and Child Welfare Home, was held at Saltcoats yesterday, Mr. Robert Headrick, presiding.

The directors’ report stated that the work of the Child Welfare Home had developed along the lines of the reception of sick or debilitated children apart from the mothers. While still receiving mothers with children, provision has been made for the reception and care of infants or young children in need of careful nursing, proper dieting, and fresh air, and many such have been given a lengthened period of residence and treatment.

During the year 1023 persons received a term of residence in the Convalescent Home, averaging two weeks.

The revenue from subscriptions and investments was £2578 and the ordinary expenditure £2960.

DROWNING ACCIDENT FEARED AT SALTCOATS

Saltcoats Police were yesterday engaged in dragging operations at the East Beach, Saltcoats, for the body of a man who was supposed to have drowned while bathing on Saturday evening.

Two men were walking from Stevenston and came across clothes and a towel lying on the foreshore, but saw no sign of a bather. They reported the matter to the police, and it was afterwards found that Mr. ROBERT McGREGOR, (24), an assistant chemist employed by Imperial Chemical Industries Limited at Ardeer Factory, had left his lodgings at Springvale Place, Saltcoats, with the intention of bathing in the sea, and had not returned.

Mr. McGregor’s home address is at Lochia, Ardrishaig.

SATURDAY 1st DECEMBER 1973

NO GOALS BUT AT LEAST THEY PLAYED

SALTCOATS VICTORIA 0 BEITH JUNIORS 0

On a day when football was at a premium and Saltcoats and Beith had the stage to themselves although the stage was more conducive to tobogganing, the several hundred spectators who filtered into Campbell Park were content just to see the ball being kicked about.

No goals were served up but goals would have been bonuses considering the game might not have been played at all. In fact, the pitch was covered with soft snow but the few patches which were treacherous had been covered with sand.

The teams did play good football, scoring chances were made and the game had its moments such as the miss of the season when Hodge of Beith who reverted from full-back to striker galloped down to Saltcoats' empty goal with every other player including Vics keeper McWilliam six yards behind him and walloped the ball high and wide.

If he had scored which he would have done 99 times out of 100 Beith would have been very lucky to leave Saltcoats with two league points. As it was they were fortunate to take a point because Saltcoats had them under almost constant pressure in the second half but could not convert their superiority into goals.

Things went wrong with the Saltcoats attack, which missed Johnny Reid, from the start. After a clever Clarke move Davis hit a first-time shot from the edge of the box and the ball grazed the crossbar. Minutes later Blackwood combined with Clarke and the winger had the keeper to beat from eight yards but he completely miskicked the ball.

At the other end Pratt made a tame passback to McWilliam and Hodge latched on to the ball but the keeper stopped his shot.

Blackwood tested Dunn with a hard grounder but the keeper made a good diving save. Saltcoats were pushing for a goal and they narrowly missed again when McCutcheon shot over the bar.

Peter Monan and Tom McGill were a force to be reckoned with however in midfield and they began to direct play towards the Saltcoats goalmouth and from a corner McWilliam did well to save a close range shot from Hodge.

When Young lost his footing on the snow Hodge got another chance but he shot by the post.

Before half-time the Beith attack kept the Vics defence on their toes and one effort by Balmer was pushed round a post by McWilliam.

The main reason for Saltcoats' superiority in the second half was a more active Frankie Clarke who received more of the ball and took on the defence. Several times he forged a path through the disciplined Beith defence but he unselfishly let his team-mates have a shot at goal instead of finishing the job himself.

In the 61st minute Saltcoats took off young winger Graham Cairns who had not done well in the slippery conditions and Gerry McCue came on. McCue began to pose a threat on the right and his presence at an earlier stage may have brought a goal.

In the 75th minute Blackwood missed a great opportunity when the ball rebounded to him when Dunn parried a Young shot. Davis and McCutcheon had netbound shots blocked by defenders.

Beith had forays towards McWilliam, with Brown and Rose quick off the mark on the wings. From a typical break from defence in the 80th minute, Rose outpaced Pratt and slid the ball by McWilliam and Hodge had the outstanding opportunity to score with only fresh air between him and the goal. He failed miserably.

The Saltcoats players could not believe their luck but they were brought back to earth when Clarke had another dribble round defenders and set up a good chance for McCutcheon but the big forward mishit the ball wide of goal.

The best players for Saltcoats were Thompson, Greenaway, Young, Davis and Clarke, while McFaul, McDermid, Moran and Balmer did well for the visitors.

Beith: Dunn; McFaul, Smith; Monan, Sheridan, McDermid; Brown, McGill, Hodge, Balmer, Rose.

Saltcoats Victoria : McWilliam; Thompson, Greenaway, Young, Pratt, Davis; Cairns ( McCue ), McCutcheon, Blackwood, Hepburn, Clarke.

Raise Street, Saltcoats.

When the operations for the new Railway Station are completed, the straight road up Raise Street will be
closed, after an existence of about 171 years, and a new road formed round by and over Kyleshill Bridge. It is not generally known that the direct road went no further than to where the present Steeple stands, till the year 1751. At that time the Parish School was at "Ardrossan Old Kirk,” and what afterwards became the school was at that time possessed by “My Lord's Coalgrieve.”

The following certificate is an interesting historical relic. It relates to the steading or cooperage in Countess Street, adjoining the Townhouse, which has just been acquired by the trustees for the proposed new Hall :

"These are certifying That, in the year Seventeen hundred & fifty-one, when the late Alexander, Earl of Eglintoune, was Setting new Tacks of many houses and yards in Saltcoats, and Endeavoring to Streight the Streets & Avenews into the Town, His Lordship...(Snip)
