SALTCOATS FREE CHURCH

The annual congregational soiree was held in the Free Church Academy on Wednesday evening last.

There was a large attendance, and reports regarding the financial affairs of the congregation were read by the treasurers, Messrs Aitken and Fullerton.

The total annual contributions up to the close of the financial year in March last were £567, which compared with the preceding year, showed an increase of £86.

The congregational treasurer also reported that the funds since then were in a satisfactory condition, and moreover that the church debt was now practically extinguished. The congregation has within the last few years rebuilt and enlarged the church at an expense of about £1800.

Addresses were delivered by Rev. Messrs Landsborough and Reid, Rev. D. Scott, minister of the congregation, and others.

During the evening the church choir enlivened the proceedings by singing appropriate pieces of music.

SALTCOATS LICENSING COURT

On Tuesday the Justices for the Saltcoats district met in the Town Hall, Saltcoats, for the purpose of disposing of applications for licenses. Mr Gavin Fullerton of Kerelaw presided.

A petition from a number of parties in Stevenston, praying for a reduction of licenses and a refusal to new applicants was read. The petition set forth that the licensed houses were in the proportion of 1 to every 148 of the population. The chairman said the petition would receive due attention.

Six parties who had omitted to renew their licenses last Court day, but had been selling under special grants since, were placed on the register.

For new premises there were three applications – one for a house in Saltcoats and two for houses in Stevenston, all of which were refused.

Four applications for renewal of transferred certificates were presented, one of which was refused and three granted.
