MUNICIPAL MEETING – SALTCOATS

It was reported that the action by Captain Cuninghame of Auchenharvie to interdict the Commissioners from forming Canal Place had been settled on the footing of Captain Cuninghame paying his own legal expenses, the Commissioners not to charge him with any part of the cost of making a road.

A motion to ask the Glasgow & South-Western Railway to erect a footbridge to connect Raise Street and Countess Street was agreed to.

SALTCOATS – ACCIDENT AT THE FREE CHURCH

On Wednesday evening eight large stones forming the skews of one side of the gable of the Free Church next the sea fell unexpectedly, demolishing part of the stone of the adjoining property. Some of the stones fell in the street and some in the garden of the property.

Fortunately no person was injured.

The stones were each about 3½ feet long and 2 feet broad.

DEATH

HUNTER: At Bank Buildings, Saltcoats, on the 22nd instant, in his 71st year, David Hunter, stationmaster, South Beach.

DEATH OF SOUTH BEACH STATIONMASTER

After an illness of about eight months, Mr. David Hunter, stationmaster at South Beach, died at his residence in Saltcoats at the advanced age of 71.

His railway career commenced with the old Ardrossan Company, but afterwards he transferred his services to the Glasgow & South-Western Company as stationmaster at Cassillis. He was successfully in a similar position at Saltcoats, Kilbirnie, and South Beach.

In his latter position he was popular with summer visitors and local residents.
