This was at the location off Sidney Street known as the Pleasure Grounds, and was a private-enterprise rival to the council's putting green at Melbourne Park.

Saltcoats Public School already in need of a supplementary hut back in the 1920s; and getting a thriftily recycled war-surplus one:

" A hut erected adjacent to Saltcoats Public School was opened on Wednesday ( 29th March ) as a supplementary classroom to accommodate 240 pupils. The building was formerly an Army hut at Gretna. "

8 APRIL 1913

At one o’clock in the morning at the Ardeer Colliery’s East Pit, Edward Daly, aged 15, a Pithead Man, who lived with his father in Quay Street, Saltcoats, was killed when pushing a coal wagon from the pithead towards the shaft, evidently thinking that the cage was there to receive it. The cage, however, was at the bottom, and the man and hutch went over the staging and down the shaft, a distance of 108 feet.

8TH APRIL 1975

On this day, Macpherson's Dairies opened a frozen food centre at their shop on the corner of Windmill and Eglinton Street in Saltcoats:

http://www.threetowners.net/forum/viewt ... 907#p74907

One of Saltcoats' oldest established family businesses, Macpherson's Dairy Ltd, have branched out this week by opening the town's first frozen food centre.

The centre is contained in the firm's premises at Eglinton Street, where the original business was started by Mr Donald Macpherson, grandfather of the present proprietor, also Donald Macpherson.

It was in the same premises that the firm introduced milk processing plant to Saltcoats so it is fitting that the new development should take place here.

The premises have been enlarged by taking into the selling area part of the storage area , and self-service freezers contain a wide variety of goods.

To mark the opening of the new department several special lines are on offer which give the housewife the opportunity of economic shopping. Dairy and grocery goods will still be sold in the Eglinton Street shop; in fact there are several special grocery lines on offer this week.

The firm also have grocery and dairy shops in Caledonia Road and Sharphill Road, Saltcoats.
