SALTCOATS - DEATH OF MR JOHN THOMSON

One of the eldest and most respected merchants of the town, Mr John Thomson, Shoemaker, died on Saturday night at his residence in Quay Street. He had a life-long connection with Saltcoats, and took a very active interest in all societies and associations connected with the town. He had been an official of the Free Gardeners Society for over half a century, and was an elder in the East (new Trinity) Church, and for a long time the treasurer, as his father had been before him.

It may be said of him that his life was one of self-sacrifice for the good of others, and the intimation of his death caused a general feeling of sorrow in the community. He was 75 years of age.

A few weeks ago he was presented with a testimonial (a purse of sovereigns) by the members of the Gardening Society and a number of old friends and well-wishers.

FUNERAL OF MR. JOHN THOMSON

Yesterday the funeral of Mr. John Thomson took place from his residence in Quay Street, Saltcoats, to the Parish churchyard.

A large number of Free Gardeners attended, Mr. Thomson being one of the oldest officials and members.

The Free Gardeners, headed by R. L. Alpine, Grand Master, walked in front, then came the coffin followed by a large number of residents.

All the shops along the route were closed, and the town bell was tolled.

Rev. J. D. Taylor offered up prayer at the grave.

FOOTBALL
MORTON v. SALTCOATS VICTORIA
At Greenock

The visitors kicked off, and were rewarded with a goal after five minutes play. The ground was much against good play. Morton endeavoured to equalise but the ball went wide. Again Saltcoats beat the Morton custodian, as a shot from the home right wing was converted into a goal by Graham. Another attempt by Morton to score was fruitless, the ball going wide.

HALF-TIME: Saltcoats Victoria, 2; Morton, 1.

On resuming the Morton goalkeeper was again beaten. Graham of the home eleven immediately thereafter put on a point, and the equaliser was driven through. Morton were now playing with spirit. Dick was successful in notching a fourth. Play was now confined to mid-field. A throw in at the stranger’s goal produced nothing.

FINAL RESULT: Morton, 4 goals; Victoria, 3.

PLUCKY CONDUCT OF TWO LADS

On Monday night, JAMES McCOLL, fish dealer, residing in Quay Street, Saltcoats, was arrested on a charge of breaking into the public house of Mr. McCutcheon, Dockhead Street.

Mrs. Towers lives above the public house, and between ten and eleven o’clock her two sons, William and John, heard a noise in the premises below. Going downstairs, they saw a man coming through a room window. He made off towards the harbour, followed by the lads. John overtook him, and jumping on his back, tumbled him. The fellow got to his feet, and dealing each of the youths a severe blow, got clear off.

In the scuffle he dropped a bottle of brandy, one of his whisky, and his cap, which was secured.

It was found that the entrance to the public house had been got by a back window. The till had been rummaged, but there was only a few shillings in coppers, the remainder of the cash having been secured in the safe.

From information given McColl was arrested. Yesterday he was taken to Kilmarnock, and emitted a declaration before the Sheriff.

SALTCOATS SLAVE SHIP

BRITANNIA, was a vessel launched in 1783 at Saltcoats, possibly under another name. She made four voyages from Liverpool as a slave ship in the triangular trade in enslaved people. She grounded at Liverpool in 1793 after the first. A French privateer captured her in 1795 during the second, and took her to Guadeloupe where the Republican Government almost certainly freed the captives. She returned to British ownership and made two more voyages as a slave ship. A French privateer captured her during her fourth voyage.

[Further details of this vessel’s history is available in the following link: - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Britannia ... oats_ship)

SALTCOATS VICTORIA v. COATBRIDGE ALBION ROVERS

These teams met at Saltcoats on Saturday afternoon to play a friendly game.

In the first half the Rovers, with the wind in their favour, kept the ball very much in the ground of the home team. Victoria broke away on several occasions, and scored a goal.

On changing ends the home team had the advantage of the wind, and had the best of play, scoring a second goal.

Before the close Roger (the Saltcoats goalkeeper) met with an accident, and had to retire.

Result – Victoria, 2; Rovers, 0.
