ARDROSSAN SCHOOL BOARD

The triennial election rook place on Saturday. There were eight candidates for seven seats.

Rev. J. W. McCall, Ardrossan, 1448; Mr. C. J. Shearer, Ardrossan, 1099; Rev. W. R. Brown, M.A., Saltcoats, 942; Mr. John Morris, Saltcoats, 881; Miss Jessie Moffat, Ardrossan, 854; Rev. Francis Halden, 782; Rev. Mr. Scott, Saltcoats.

The first seven were successful candidates.

ARDROSSAN – TRADE AT THE NEW DOCK

Yesterday, 312 tons of coal were shipped on board the steamer LORD LANDSDDOWNE, at the hydraulic hoist on the east side of the dock, in one hour and a quarter.

The LORD LANDSDOWNE is the largest vessel which has yet been loaded at the dock. She carries 4000 tons burden, and is owned by the Mayor of Belfast.

About six o'clock yesterday morning there was found behind the stone-crusher on the harbour a man named LIGHTBODY, a carter at Ardrossan, with his legs severely smashed. He was at once removed to Kilmarnock Infirmary.

FATAL RESULT OF AN ACCIDENT

On Sunday afternoon WILLIAM LIGHTBODY, waggon driver, Montgomerie Lane, Ardrossan, died in Kilmarnock Infirmary from the result of an accident that befell him late on Saturday night.

It is supposed that he was going home after work, and having to cross the line was knocked down and run over. He was found lying on the line on Sunday morning, and brought to Kilmarnock.

The deceased was 27 years of age, married, and leaves a widow and several children.

THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD

THE ARRIVAL OF THE GUNBAR

The new twin-screw steamer GUNBAR, built by Ardrossan Shipbuilding Company, for the North Coast Steam Navigation Company Limited, arrived at Sydney early yesterday morning on her maiden voyage to Australia.

The vessel left Ardrossan on February 7.

ARDROSSAN – POLICE COMMISSIONERS

The recently elected police commissioners met yesterday at noon in the town-clerk’s office, when all of them qualified by taking the oath.

The following appointments were then made: - Provost Barr, chief magistrate; Messrs Currie and Hogarth, junior magistrates; Thomas Gilfillan, treasurer; Messrs Mack and Cook, town-clerks; William Douglas, solicitor; and John Emslie, procurator-fiscal.

ARDROSSAN – MERCHANTS’ HOLIDAY

Yesterday the banks, public offices, and merchants’ shops were shut on the occasion of the annual spring holiday.

The weather, through threatening in the morning, cleared up fine during the day.

A large number of persons went by rail to Glasgow, Kilmarnock, Ayr, Dumfries, and Carlisle. Over 300 persons travelled to Glasgow by the Glasgow & South-Western and a good number by the Caledonian Company’s line.

ARDROSSAN – ERECTION OF NEW ISLAND PLATFORM

The new island platform, erected at the point of the quay instead of the old one, for the convenience of passengers travelling by the Glasgow & South-Western Railway steamer, has been so far completed that the company is enabled to use it while the old platform is being dismantled.

The iron roofing which is to extend over the new platform is being rapidly built.

An office, a waiting-room, and other places for the convenience of passengers are also being built.

RECRUITING RALLY AT KILMARNOCK

Kilmarnock National Service Committee have made arrangements for a big recruiting rally and demonstration to be held in the town on Saturday, May 6.

The 2nd Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers is sending its military and pipe bands, Bren gun and anti-aircraft gun detachments, and mechanical units.

Also taking part will be detachments from the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and the county territorial units – the 4th 5th R.S.F. 79th Lowland Brigade R.A., and Ayrshire Yeomanry, and about 500 people from the local civilian National Service units.

There will be a parade through the streets of the town, and in the evening military demonstrations with running commentaries will be given in Rugby Park. Included in these will be aeroplane and searchlight displays.

Similar demonstrations will be given at Ayr and Ardrossan during the same week.

AYR CHILD NEGLECT CASE

AMBROSE SMITH, (49), clerk, 17 Russell Street, Ayr, was fined £5, with the alternative of 30 days’ imprisonment, at Ayr Sheriff Court yesterday, when he was convicted on evidence of having neglected his child, aged 11 years, by failing to provide adequate food and clothing.

The offence was committed between September 25, 1937, and March 12, 1938.

Smith, who works at Ardrossan, left his house in Ayr saying he was going for a holiday, and he failed to keep his promise to send 15s a week to maintain his family.
