RAILWAY TRAFFIC DISLOCATED AT SALTCOATS

The Caledonian Railway was flooded between Saltcoats and Ardrossan owing to several burns overflowing their banks. The water lay to a depth of between two and three feet.

Traffic was in consequence interrupted.

The 7.15 from Glasgow could not proceed beyond Saltcoats. The train was used to convey passengers to Glasgow at 8.48. Other trains arriving were dealt with in a similar way.

The passengers for Arran and Belfast were conveyed to the steamers in brakes with as much promptitude as possible. Covered vehicles, where they could be got, were provided for ladies and children.

In various parts of the town, houses and gardens were flooded. The inhabitants of Green Street, Vernon Street, and Quay Street, suffered most in this respect.

SALTCOATS – ALLEGED SHOPLIFTING BY A RETURNED CONVICTED

On Wednesday ELIZABETH McINALTY or HOWITT was taken to Kilmarnock to he tried before the Sheriff charged with shoplifting.

Her arrest was smartly effected by Inspector Smith, who was informed that she had attempted to steal a shirt from a shop door in Dockhead Street. He watched her movements, and McInalty having been joined by another woman, he obtained the assistance of Constable Sloan, and arrested her as they were loitering near a pawn office. Four new aprons were found in McInalty’s possession.

On enquiry at the pawn office it was found that two new aprons and a pair of trousers had been pledged. These goods were identified by local shopkeepers as having been stolen.

The companion of McInalty was liberated.

McInalty, after emitting a declaration, was committed to prison. She received 7 years’ penal servitude in 1852 for breaking into a shop in Saltcoats, and since then has had short terms of imprisonment.
