THE STRIKE AT ARDROSSAN

There were no developments yesterday in the situation at Ardrossan Harbour.

Over 100 imported labourers were employed at the docks during the day, progress being made in discharging all the vessels in the port.

The strike-breaker who has now taken over control of the work is advertising for navvies to train as coal trimmers and ore men, and also for housing accommodation in the town.

The strikers were very quiet all day, no disturbances taking place.

Provost Chrystie yesterday discussed the situation with the harbour directors, but those best qualified to form an opinion are not inclined to believe that an effective attempt at intervention can be made at the present time.

INAUGURATION OF ORGAN IN SEAMEN’S BETHEL

On Saturday evening Miss Galloway, Kilmeny, inaugurated an organ in the Seamen’s Bethel.

Captain Shields handed over the instrument, and stated that of the money subscribed there remained a surplus of £7, which, he suggested, should form the nucleus of a sum to be devoted to the opening of a reading room for sailors.

Rev. J. L. King, M.A., in name of the Bethel, accepted the organ.

ARDROSSAN HARBOUR STRIKE

The Ardrossan dock strikers held a demonstration on Saturday afternoon, and, headed by a band of pipers paraded the principal streets of the town.

At an open-air meeting speeches were delivered by Mr Joseph Houghton, of the Dockers’ Union; Mr French, of the Seamen’s and Firemen’s Union, and others.

It was reported that all but two of the cranemen had again joined the strikers. The harbour officials deny this, however, and state that the only cranemen not at work are two who are afraid to run the risk of molestation, and one who is unwell.

It was stated on good authority on Saturday that a large number of Messrs William Christie & Company’s men had approached the head of the firm on Saturday with a view to returning to work today, but no definite arrangement was made.

ARDROSSAN DOCK STRIKE

There was little change in the situation at Ardrossan yesterday.

Most of the free labourers had returned to Glasgow on Saturday, but 140 others were brought in yesterday morning, and the work of discharging the vessels in the port proceeded briskly throughout the day.

The Norwegian steamer THODE FAGELUND has arrived with a cargo of 5000 tons of iron ore.

Two of the employees of Messrs William Christie & Company returned to work yesterday morning.

Last night it was rumoured that steps were being taken to enlist the services of the Shipping Federation in attempting to bring about a settlement of the strike.

ARDROSSAN – FATAL DROWNING ACCIDENT

About four o’clock yesterday afternoon a lad named THOMAS COWAN, aged 18 years, was drowned off the old Belfast Pier.

Cowan was employed as a cook on board one of the dredgers, and was crossing in a boat from the dredger to the quay. While he was crossing a chain securing the dredger to the pier the chain was tightened suddenly through the strain of the steamer Scotia, which had just arrived, upon a rope fixed to another part of the dredger.

The boat capsized, and the lad was thrown into the water. There were no workmen about owing to the roughness of the weather, and before assistance could be rendered the unfortunate lad had sank.

The body was recovered after being immersed for twenty-five minutes. Medical aid was procured, and the usual methods of restoration were applied, but life was finally pronounced extinct.

ARDROSSAN DOCK STRIKE

A settlement of the Ardrossan dockers’ strike is to all appearances as far away as ever.

Fully 50 free labourers were brought to the harbour from Belfast yesterday morning, a number of the Glasgow men being sent home in order to make room for them.

The day passed without incident, the stormy weather keeping most of the strikers indoors.

STOWAWAY EVADES POLICE AT ARDROSSAN
When the Asteria, a collier, arrived yesterday at Ardrossan from Belfast, a stowaway was discovered on board. The police were informed but before their arrival, the man disappeared, apparently having slipped ashore unobserved while the vessel was being tied up.
