When I worked in the Melbourne Cafe back in 1968, the Cafe was open til 11pm Friday and Saturday, and 10pm on a Sunday. My starting pay was 1/9d an hour (7.5 p) rising to 2/- (10p) an hour after 3 months. It was always busy too. Used to love Fridays and Saturdays when the pubs came out - drunk eejits used to overtip

Used to love when they had the jukebox...you would put coins in and there was always the gap before the records would start. :-)

The jukebox downstairs used to give 3 records for a shilling (5p) - but the upstairs one (there used to be additional seating up there with tables and chairs out in the balcony) took wooden thruppeny bits - 3 plays for a tanner! Mind you the records were mid to late 50s rather than late 60s.

I have no recollection of a 'balcony' in the Melbourne Café - where on earth did it face on to?
Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.

It faced the main street at the front of the cafe.
