Born Stevenston, Mother from Saltcoats Father Kilwinning. I joined the Marines Married a lass from Ulster moved around a bit my last Draft was Arbroath and here I settled. When I go home I see the changes some of it stems from nostalgia, I played skated and fished in the quarry at the rec, the big tunnel the wee tunnel not forgetting the shore, the three towns and Kilwinning were my playground. The people are still so friendly and I love their dry sense of humour, My better half agrees with me she worked for a while in Ghinns in Saltcoats. We need to change our way of shopping (we already have ) cut down buying on line use the wee shops more.
Ardeer rec was the main employer and they pumped money into everything. Here in Arbroath it was the fishing farming and engineering, two of the three have gone, the harbour is now a thriving Marina, wet fish shops a plenty and the locals use them not just the tourists, they have three caravan sites plus the sea front is a gem, a wee train great play park and skate park. It's not utopia we have a drug vandal and yob problem. The threetowns have the same basics, sea scenery and great people. I wish you all the best for the future.

Always proud to say where I come from. and chuffed to bits with this site. :hi: :hi: :hi:

This must be where you mean brosie. These tunnels facilitate the Stevenston burn below Glencairn street.

how's this for an idea to boost the economy of the three towns.
Encourage some multi millionaire to build a modern Casino/resort/Hotel complex, at the old can factory site near the harbour. Its an ideal place, with the marina close by where the High roller can Moore the luxury boats, there is also rail links to Glasgow and other places. This complex would employ hundreds of people and attract thousands, lots of shops and hotels would be needed to cater for all these people.
I'm sure it could work and put Ardrossan back on {The place to visit} list.
I feel something along these lines is the way to go as I don't see any big industry ever coming back to the three towns.

I left Salcoats in 1969 and have been back at least twice a year and would just like to say the wee toon has changed but everywhere else has nothings the same some people remember how it was and when they return for a visit expect it to be the same but it never will be,because it,s the time we live in ,I live in Bangor county down it was a great place just like Saltcoats that's why I settled there but the hairs on the back of my head raise when I go down town and see shut shops and the place full of charity shops and pound shops soo most of the small towns are the same run down because there is no money to be pumped into the places cause of Westminster cuts.

Too true. Couldn't understand past few times there, all the 'good' shops gone, beggars in the street quite proud.

Regarding beggars in the Threetowns area, they're few and far between.
I sympathise with anyone who finds themselves in that position though - especially as I wouldn't know what the circumstances were that brought them to that point in their lives.
I've never ever encountered a so called 'proud' beggar here and I've lived in the area all my life.

I'm also wondering if MANBEARS USERNAME WAS JUST BECAUSE HE LEFT THE CAPS LOCK ON.

I'm not home often, but last few times sellers of the 'big Issue' every few feet and my wee sis, not well off herself, doling out pound notes to them and I have to add, they all looked well fed and happy. Real cases of need I help. As to MANBEARS name? Really?

The supermarkets have caused the decline of the small shops. However there are plenty of hairdressers offering all kinds of expensive services. People and their kids are better dressed than they have ever been and as for beggars the only ones I see are folk wanting you to give your bank details for charities; get real.

Big Issue sellers aren't beggars morag. But if your sister - or indeed yourself ever encounter a real beggar then I'm sure you'll both be able to tell the difference.

Of course the mention of MANBEARS username is a bit tongue in cheek there. Mind you, I'm thinking of changing mine to KILLERWHALE with the caps left on.
