Cuninghame Speakers' Club instituted a debating contest for local schools in the 1970s, and in the initial years at least taking part were Ardrossan Academy, Auchenharvie Academy and Garnock Academy.
This picture shows the three teams at the end of the 1973 contest, with the winners Ardrossan Academy receiving their prize of a gavel from Speakers' Club president Jim Muir.
From left to right the Ardrossan Academy pupils are Peter Hutchison and Allan Cowan.
Again in November 1974 the same three schools competed, and once more Ardrossan Academy won. The team are pictured here with what was now a " golden gavel " trophy.
From left to right they are Fiona Laing and Susan Geddes. The subject they all had to debate this year, as a matter of interest, was the proposal that the school leaving age , rather than being raised to 16 as it was around that time, should be lowered to 14 !
