I was over at central hospital xray dept. they have donated books there if u take one you give a donation for cancer care I picked one up called gentle johhny ramensky I am in the process of reading it what a character he was there are some photos in the book there one of him sitting on the sea wall in saltcoats, pretty sure it was after the war, description in book of the other photos I will type as they are printed in the book (The most spectacular mementoes acquired by johnny in Germany and Italy are a pair of Nazi banners complete with swastika and heavy gold trim, one reading Marshal of the Great German Empire, the other Commander -in -chief of the Luftwaffe also securely held in the safety of a Scottish bank are his well used green beret and other bits and pieces from his life behind the lines including his trusty Commando compass and a silk handkerchief map ) for thos who might not know he was a safecracker from the gorbals he pleaded with the authorities to let him do his bit and they duly did and used him behind the lines numerouse times ive not fifnished the book yet but I think after the war he just couldn't keep on the straight and narrow and went back to his old ways .

I've just started reading Old Ayrshire Days by William Robertson (1905). I hope it's as good as his other books.
It has an interesting dedication:
To the Gallant Admiral
Christmas 1923
The most important hour is always the present, the most significant person is the one opposite you right now, and the most necessary deed is always love. - Meister Eckhart (c.1260 - c.1328)

Meg if you like Quinton Jardine try 'Matthew's Tale' a historical novel about a battle scarred soldier who returned home to Scotland from the Napoleonic wars to find things were not the same. I think it is a good read.

Anyone ever read Futility or the Wreck of the Titan? This book was written 14 years before Titanic sank but the similarities are very spooky.

Just finished reading "for the glory" the biography of Eric Liddell, the Scottish Olympic runner and Misssionary to China who died in a Japanese POW camp in 1945. A very inspiring read.

I am in the middle of reading 'Wideacre' which is magnificent !!

It is set in the 1800s when females had no rights to inherit. The central character (female) tries EVERYTHING to inherit the land, committing crimes, cheating, lying and deceiving.

Cannot put this book down, and feel I am actually right there. Knocks Scarlett O'Hara right off her pedestal.

Catherine, I agree with Sarah, you will enjoy The Power of Ine and most likely read other Bryce Courteny books. I have a few in the bookcase for a rainy day.
