broken

Post by 5siamese7 »

A really gut wrenching series with such fine actors, in particular Sean Bean who plays a priest who has his own demons to face. I do believe he has a genuine relationship with Jesus but this is sorely tested. One of his parishioners tells him in confession that she is going to kill herself. He says, please don't kill yourself ,but because she told him in confession he is restricted in what he can do to help. Its tough to watch.

I think you need to be brought up from birth in a very strong religious culture like Catholicism, orthodox Judaism, conservative Islam, Calvinism, or Plymouth Brethren, to understand just what a hold it can exert, and how hard it is to "leave".
While his life was much less dramatic than the series, the memoir of Bishop Richard Holloway, Leaving Alexandria (i.e., near Helensburgh) describes how, after soul-searching since his teens, he came to the conclusion in his 70s that his relationship with God was only one-way.
