Jerry's Pier, Ardrossan
The origin of Mongomerie, Winton and the Lighthouse Piers are apparent but does anyone know who or what Jerry was?
Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.

P.T. , what are you talking about. Is it Jerry Springer, Jerry built, Tom an Jerry, or what.Penny Tray wrote:The origin of Mongomerie, Winton and the Lighthouse Piers are apparent but does anyone know who or what Jerry was?
For us out of towners you will need to expand.

LP...was Jerrys pier down by the drydocks in the shipward by the bridge which was a lock. Thats what my recollection is but no idea how it got its name. I dont believe it there anymore but I might be wrong....Geordie

Geordie,
It was situated between Winton Pier and the Dock Gate Bridge. When the tide was out it had a lovely sandy beach about 30 yards wide, ideal for swimming. Access, as I recall, was by scrambling down a sloping ramp. Small private boats tended to tie up at this location too.
Little Plum,
The only gag you missed was Jerry Can wherein might lie the answer. I wonder if at one time Jerry Cans were stacked there, either to fuel the small boats I've mentioned or to be loaded onto larger vessels. This might give it some link to the Can Factory which wasn't a million miles away.

Another possibility that occurred to me is that it was JERRY BUILT, known therefore as the Jerry Pier and latterly Jerry's Pier!
Origin
The phrase has been around since at least 1869, when it was defined in the Lonsdale Glossary:
"Jerry-built, slightly, or unsubstantially built."
This would maybe account for it never being used, in my experience, for other than small boats?

Oh, the penny has dropped sort to speak, check out my original suggestion. If the structure was a make shift/temp job, I would agree with the tag "Jerry" and it has become a tag used by Ardrossan locals in their reference to that area.Penny Tray wrote:Another possibility that occurred to me is that it was JERRY BUILT,

Little Plum,
Either missed that or forgot it from your original post. You're just too good.

Here's an excellent photo of Jerry's pier, situated between Winton Pier and the Lighthouse Pier:

Still don't know where it got its name from. But I do remember the wee boats tied up there - that was part of our playground while growing up. We had the docks, the seashore and the countryside - how lucky were we?
