Found this amongst hoarded stuff from some years ago. Can't recall seeing the Saltcoats saltworks image in the 5th page before.

Now, this is very, very interesting.
Looking at the pictures of the Saltcoats works, I was trying to figure out where they were.
Looking at the first picture, I thought I could see the harbour and the sea-wall in the background.
And in the one where they are collecting the salt from the pan, I thought the buiding in the top right-hand corner is the harbour-master's house.
This would place the pans somewhere near where the Pavilion is today.
Does anybody know where they were?

There were in fact two sites of salt pans in Saltcoats. The North Pans were where the bathing pond was later built, and had fallen into disuse by the middle of the nineteenth century. The South Pans were down by the harbour, and are the ones that would have appeared in the photographs; they're marked on this map :
