Another Saltcoats Pool

Post by Hughie »

Pool Saltcoast.jpg
In the topic Very old Saltcoats swimming pool we spoke about the possibility of inmates of the nearby Mission Coast Home bathing in the pool which is further along towards the harbour. But I've only just noticed this smaller purposely built pool right opposite the home and the Landsborough Church - seems a lot more convenient for that purpose.

Has anyone else seen any other photos showing this pool? Are there parts of it still visible today?

Hughie strangely enough I had a look along this part of the shoreline last week looking for the pool. I found it but couldn’t get access to it because the hole in the wall is blocked off. I could however see it partially through a gap. Regarding another pool I Never noticed any remains or signs of its existence. But then I was looking for the one that I found. I will look for it next time my walk takes me along that way.

It looks as if the wee pool was there before the one near the harbour. It's shown on the 1895 OS map.

Both are on the 1909 one (and the 1937 map).

Thanks for the replies, Angus and Irene. Wonder why I've never noticed it before. For those interested in the history of the Mission Coast Home. Down South (Susan), started a topic some time ago named History of the Mission Coast Home which should interest locals.

Grew up in Harbour Street as a kid 50 year ago and never away from the ‘rocks’ from round by the tower down to the steps at the old toilets and old shelter. (aka the foreshore bar) I walked and ran round the big pond wall many many times but never ever came across this smaller pond that is in the photo. It wasn’t there at that time.
