ASH Question on Mastermind

Post by Hughie »

Apparently there was a question on Mastermind the other night along the following lines:
"What pseudonym did Keir Hardie use when writing to the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald?"

Don't know how often he wrote to the editor. This from 29 July 1887

I was only half listening to the questions Hughie, but thought it asked what pseudonym did he use when writing his column for the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald, which sounds like it was a regular occurrence.

Another question asked on the same program was “what Links golf course was host to the Open over a stated three or four years” - answer was Prestwick!

Keir Hardie, as a boy, was a "TRAPPER" down the coal mines - i.e. someone who operated the ventilation system.

According to William Stewart's biography he joined the staff of the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald and its offshoot the Cumnock News in 1882. He supplied news of the district and under the name of "The Trapper" wrote a weekly article called "Black Diamonds; or, Mining Notes worth Minding" until the end of 1887.
