Very early school sports champions ;-)

Post by Hughie »

Came across an old email from 2000 from Jean (McCracken) Boyce, an old classmate of mine. Jean was one of the volunteers who helped compile the magnificent Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald's BMD intimations back then. She wrote:
Came across a few wee snippets today as I was going through a back
dated herald. Eglinton Winton prize giving 9th July 1948 1B infant class
1st Marion McCubbin, 2nd Joseph Milligan, 3rd eq Sophia Stewart and Hugh
McCallum. Also 25th June 1948 The school sports.3rd place in the sack race.
Must show this to the grandkids, so they can see where their sporting genes came from.
Wondering if the Marion McCubbin mentioned is actually Mary McCubbin, Bobby McCubbin's sister - she was a brilliant runner. I remember the other two names mentioned but thought like Mary, they were perhaps a year or so ahead of me.

Mary was ahead of you and Bobby so would not have been in infant 1b. She was 18 months older than Bobby. There are Marion's in the family but age is not right for them either.
Bobby doesn't remember sports in Primary, just after the qualifying.
Bit confusing🤔

Woke up this morning and realised that that wasn't me. It was the other Hugh McCallum who was in Joe Milligan's class - they were perhaps 18 months ahead of me - Hugh's brother Ian was in my class. They originally lived in Beggs Terrace, Ardrossan before moving to Saltcoats where their dad had a contracting business.

Here's Hugh McCallum and Joe Milligan (top left) in an Eglinton class photo:

I remember Joe at school, even at Winton. Used to think he was one of your brothers, Sarah.

Sorry to hear that, Sarah. He would have been in my eldest brother's class through Eglinton / Winton. I remember Charlie all those years ago getting signed up for Colchester F.C.
