Re: ICI Shocker !!
Whereabouts on Facebook are people talking about this?
Re: ICI Shocker !!
It's on the Stevenston Ayrshire Now n Then FB group Mario. You will need to join up to contribute.

As I said in my previous post, I presume that it was much more dangerous when operational. Of course there will be dangers in such a huge complex, and it may take sometime to identify and eradicate same. It will be for intellects greater than mine to determine the feasibility of such an undertaking. However this must be part of the re generation process . Approached sensibly and sensitively, this project could be a considerable asset to the area.

Totally agree. If somebody actually got up off their arse, something could be achieved.

Re: ICI Shocker !!
Does anyone know the nature of the contamination that's still there, or if the related ICI clean-up fund was ever used?
I wonder if it's not as bad as might be first thought. Making and storing blasting explosives and powders wasn't an especially poisonous industry, but there were some specialist chemical areas, I guess.

Re: ICI Shocker !!
My understanding is that, when an explosive production area was considered redundant, particularly those containing nitro glycerine, that area was purged with NG destroyer prior to the building being demolished, or a change of use initiated. With regard to the chemical production areas, apart from the silicone plant and a considerable tract of land bordering the West Bank of the river Garnock and extending towards the wharf, which was monitored fairly regularly by the water authority, I can think of no other area which today might be considered dangerous. However, as i have previously observed I am sure that great care would be exercised by the competent authority before granting permission for unrestricted public access, or building in particular areas.

From what I can tell from the map , provided by N A C, it would appear that the proposed re development site is directly opposite the area which I , in my previous post considered to be the most contaminated and may require further investigation. The ' Garnock ' is quite wide at this point, and no production, explosive, chemical, or other, took place on that side of the water Since the river is tidal at this point, and the water level rises and falls considerably from the estuary to , and beyond the Kilwinning by pass, and the 'Factory ' has all but ceased production, it is reasonable to assume that most serious contamination would have been washed away considering two tides per day from the cessation period till the present. And as I intimated previously , the water quality was monitored by the Water Authority , during the production period. I am not aware of any default during this time, however without checking the relevant documentation I cannot be certain.

From the photograph of the dunes area shown, there are no reference features indicating the exact area. I wold imagine however that it might be part of the stretch from Stevenston Point to Irvine Bar. This area was used principally for the storage of explosives, I presume that properly surveyed this particular area would present no significant problem.

With regard to the Wildlife aspect of the current redevelopment plan, Ardeer factory existed for decades where Wildlife and humankind lived cheek by jowl and mutual respect. Some parts of the factory complex were simply a Wildlife reserve with buildings. I have seen Swans, in the artificial ponds, owls in the derelict farm buildings, all sorts of other birds, heron in the Garnock , frogs , newts, a plethora of insects, deer, foxes etc, etc. All of these creatures co existing with mankind in perfect harmony principally, I believe because they never felt threatened. Surely , with proper planning and education of the next generation , a portion of the vast area can be set aside to continue a natural environment for all of the creatures afore mentioned. I consider that this would be an asset to the wider community at large.

This subject appears to have died the death. Can anyone provide a current update ?.
