Ardrossan Indoor Bowling Club

Post by Mitchy »

Looking at the Indoor Bowling club today made me wonder what occupied the site before the club was built in 1974. Can anyone remember?

It was tennis courts when I was a boy. There was also an 'old folks' club in a Nissen hut against the back wall at the Castle Hill.

Cheers P.T. PS did they still wear long trousers to play tennis in those days? :)

I sense you're being sarcastic Mitchy  , but the sensible ones did because the courts had gravel surfaces.

Incidentally, there were courts on either side of the Town Hall.

So the small Civic Centre hall was built on the other courts then.

Correct, that and a car park which the last time I was there accommodated a number of recycle bins.

There must be photographs somewhere of the tennis courts. They, I recall, were surrounded by very high mesh fences. It would have been quite dangerous I suppose if the tennis balls ever bounced amongst the traffic on Glasgow Street.
