Ardrossan & Farms Aerial View 1910
This is an aerial view of the upper part of Ardrossan and farms as they were in 1910. Thanks to the owner of this image I can show and discuss this with you. Let's see what catches your eyes.

Hughie,
That's a great photo but a couple of wee points which might or might not be right!
I think Rashley Farm seems to be sitting too high up and could instead be Little Busbie. There might also be a building below the typed name "Busbie Dam" which would be Meikle Busbie. And the white shape to the right of the typed name "Busbie Dam" could be Coalhill Farm.
I've been wrong before though !

Curious to know what the "valve works" were???

I couldn't confirm or deny what you say, Penny. The other farms closer to the town I do recognise. I would have expected to see Chapellhill Farm on the left of Dalry Road but it obviously was built later - as was your house.
Here you go, Viv. Again thanks to a local resident for the image. I find this very interesting, I served an apprenticeship as an iron moulder in Yuille's Winton Foundry - just off Dalry Road. We specialised in casting valve and pump casings for shipbuilding on the Clyde - casings that were like those in this photo. The location of the Valve works seem to be where the Metalic Co. as we knew it was later to be.

I had a good look for Chapelhill Farm too but came to the conclusion that it's further over to the left. The Glasgow Herald edition of 30 June 1897 reported that there was an outbreak of swine fever at Chapel Hill Farm, so it was definitely there in 1910.

Yes, I can see that now, the land rises on the left in the photo but not high or far enough to show the farm house.Penny Tray wrote:I had a good look for Chapelhill Farm too but came to the conclusion that it's further over to the left.

Metallic Manufacturing Company, formerly Valve Works. These photographs were taken in 1969.

Interesting photo.
Talk about the class society. It's very obvious who the bosses are. The only hatless person, (except the ladies) is the young man in the front row, who I suspect works in the office and is thus neither boss nor labourer.
The name on the plaque is Walls Valve Mnf. Coy. Can anybody shed any light on that? Is that a date there which I cannot decipher?
JD.

This image joins up on the right side of the image in the first post in this topic. The Ardrossan to Largs railway runs just behind Eglinton School.

Jd. I think it is 8/8/1908.
