Changes in Ardrossan in Recent Years
Re: Changes in Ardrossan in Recent Years
I remember going to two wedding receptions in the eglinton hotel before it started to get run down,. Seemingly due to the owner who had a problem with alcohol i beleive. he was a wellknown scottish singer, and was supposedly. responsible for the hotel going on fire after many years of unoccupancy. : cant remember his name at the moment. But so many hotels have closed in the aerea.the kilmeny, the ingledene, the stanley. The bay.

Calum Kennedy latterly owned the Eglinton Hotel.

Penny Tray wrote:There is a family intimation in the Glasgow Herald recording the death of a PETER KERR, Carrier, 'Catacol',13 Barrie Terrace, Ardrossan; and the upholsterers business mentioned by Meekan was Kerr and Company, Upholsterers, 27 Glasgow Street, Ardrossan.
I think I remember them moving from Princes Street to Glasgow Street although I thought it was to the even number side of the street. (the coop side)

That's interesting Meekan. I took my information from the 1937 Business Directory. If you are correct in remembering them moving from Princes Street to Glasgow Street, that would suggest that the moved from Glasgow Street to Princes Street and then back to Glasgow Street, maybe latterly to the 'even' side as opposed to the 'odd' side.
Maybe Down South could oblige us by looking the business up in her 60s telephone directory!

In the 1967 telephone directory Kerr & Co are at 29 Princes Street. Is it possible they may have moved again after that part of Princes Street was demolished in the early 1970s ?

INGLEDENE HOTEL
Another building in Ardrossan that has changed is the Ingledene Hotel. I don't know when it opened but the photo below was taken on 14 September 2002 shortly before it closed. It is now residential property.

I remember the name now but I had outgrown the place by then. If I remember correctly it was decorated in dark colours I was in there at birthday parties.
