Instead of demolishing it, they should re-do the interior to create the flats. I reckon it would be worth a lot more if the structure of the building was still sandstone. Perhaps turn it into one- or two-bedroom flats for people who want to retire to a place with a view. It's a lovely old building. I'm sure it was a convent at one time.

There was a convent with nuns who'd go anywhere and feed, clean and care for, for free, the elderly and needy, forget the name but think they were more South Beach housed.

The nuns in Montgomerie Crescent were the Franciscan Sisters.

Thanks, George. They came and helped with my grampa when he was in his 80's, bedridden with kidney failure. My gran, also in her eighties, maybe slightly older eighty-ish than she'd let on, couldn't help much and my mum and dad and us kids did what we could, but the nuns were great, efficient. I think though, I remember them as 'the nursing sisters' didn't know they were Franciscans..always loved St. Francis mind..

The Nursing Sisters you mentioned were based in Ardrossan, not Saltcoats. They were called the Misericorde Sisters and their convent was at 10 South Crescent Ardrossan from 1947 to 1977. Last month, Down South made a post about the Ardrossan Nursing Sisters here - http://www.threetowners.net/forum/viewt ... rs#p127593.

The Franciscan Sisters' convent was at 22 Montgomerie Crescent, Saltcoats. They were not Nursing Sisters.

The house was used as a holiday house by the nuns and I can remember that from our kitchen window we could see them wending their way on Sunday evenings to Benediction.
The little chapel was lovely and I served Mass there several times in my role as a young altar boy .

Any update on Veronica's house?

Was in it in the '70s. My mate and I were asked to quote to re-wire it. However far too big a job for us then.
Beautiful house. Loads of rooms and every room has a plaque on it with a biblical name, and as another poster said it has it's own private chapel.
Such a shame it is in disrepair.

HI all I worked at Fullertons Ironmongers Saltcoats I would deliver the seed potatoes and other garden things I would ring the bell at the front door I could hear the nuns foot steps coming along the corridor when the door was openend I had to carry the sack of seed potatoes into the back garden where the nuns were gardening the back garden was massive I think they were originaliy From France but they would never speak to me when I was doing my deliveries .
