John Kerr

Post by sweet caroline »

Came across this ,

Kerr, John (1824-1907) of Ardrossan. Physicist and lecturer in mathematics. In 1876 he discovered the 'magneto-optic effect' which was then named after him. He was the author of An Elementary Treatise on Rational Mechanics (1867). Elected FRS.

I had a feint recollection of this name and after struggling with the search facility, found that Penny Tray had noted his relevance in this post from a few years ago.
I'm still saving up for a signature.

Hi
I am intrigued with some of the information about Dr. John Kerr, my great great grandfather. I was aware that his father Thomas was a fish monger or related occupation. Family tradition has it that Thomas came from the Isle of Skye but I have yet to find support for this. You mention that Thomas' wife was Mary Miller - I would very much be interested in the source of this information. With John's sons what is a little confusing is that all of his sons changed the spelling of the surname from "Kerr" to "Ker". I am also looking for further support for the parents of John Kerr's wife, Marion Balfour -- her parents were likely John Balfour (British military officer) and Charlotte Clarke (who died in Tasmania in her early 30's). I would be glad to share further information I have. I am descended from John Kerr through his son William Ker and grandson Graham Ker.
Thanks :D
Graham

Stewartm,
You can't make contact with a member privately through the system till you've had at least one post approved. You're there now! So go to back to his post in this topic and click on the "contact" bubble in his profile - you should be able to make contact that way, though it has been a few years.

The name seems to change from Herr to Kerr, is that just a typo?
