The foundation stone has still not been traced but here's another wee twist to the story from the 28 July edition of the Evening Times in 1955:

"Sixty-seven years ago workmen building the storm gates for the Eglinton Dock at Ardrossan harbour placed a copy of the 'Evening Times' dated October 26 1888, inside a block of cement and lowered the block underwater.

It remained there until this week, when men were repairing the storm gate.

The block, weighing about 3 cwt, dropped and split. Inside the men found the 'Evening Times', parts of which were still legible.

Eglinton Dock was not opened until 1892, but the storm gates were constructed in 1888."

Nae mention of inscribed silver plates or a bottle containing current coins of the realm
Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.

Someone posted the image on the left on FB saying it was on the back wall of the new Medical Centre. So, that would be the area behind the old Police Station. The image on the right is posted on page two of this topic. There is mention of it being the back of the stables of the Old Eglinton Hotel so the vertical slots could possibly be for ventilation, but as for the cut out below both. :smt102

Hi Hughie,

I don't think the photos are of the same place.
1) the surrounding stonework doesn't match, and
2) there's no buttress on the left-hand photo.

What I meant, John, is that the photos are of different parts of the same wall, and my thinking is the slots are part of the ventilation for what was the Eglinton Hotel stables.
