Hello, my name is Colin. Im here because I'm on a quest to learn about my roots and where I came from. For the last year I've been attempting to research my family history, only to hit a roadblock when it came to my grandmother's side. She was born and raised in Ardrossan, her parents were married in Ardrossan. Thats all I know and Id like to learn more about where she came from and maybe connect to family still there?

Hello, My name is Graham and I live just north of Brisbane, Queensland. I am here because I believe my father, Alexander Allen McLauchlan, was born in Ayr, possibly in Stevenson. He was born 12 January 1905 and migrated to Queensland in 1928 and died in Brisbane in 1960. His father was a John McLauchlan and his mother was possibly an Alice unknown. Unfortunately that is all I known about them and would like to learn more if anyone has information about this family I would appreciate hearing about them.

Hi Graham, welcome! I hope someone else can help you. But in the meantime you might want to have a look through the Ayrshire Databases - they are a great source of information for family researchers. You can gain entry by signing in here:

Hi Graham, I sent a private message to you about your grandparents.

I was wondering if anyone can remember the name of the hotel /pub that was directly opposite Saltcoats train station in the late 1960s early 1970s? I have such happy memories of Saltcoats but I was only around 8 or 9 years old and my memories are a bit sketchy. I remember the place we stayed had a bar with a piano and the bedrooms were upstairs. I think it might have been the Railway Hotel or the Vernon Hotel as both those names seem to ring a bell. Down from the hotel I remember a shop that sold just about everything with buckets and spades etc hanging outside. My mum got sick around 1975 and I think our last holiday in Saltcoats would have been around 1972/73. So if anyone can remember that far back it would be lovely to hear about anything they know or see photos of that area around the station around that time.

Macrozzie,

Welcome to Threetowners.

I think you're talking about the HOTEL VERNON, seen in the background in the first link; the pub would be the BAR ONE, seen in the second link; and the shop is undoubtedly VERONICA's at 45 Countess Street.

A few more photos of the area round the station in the 1960s, courtesy of another bus enthusiast:

These first two also show the Hotel Vernon:

And these two show the scene at the opposite side of Countess Street:

A warm welcome to the threetowners Alex - I grew up just round the corner in Clyde Terrace - and I know there are lots of people from around that area on the forum. Maybe a good place for you to start would be the school photos on the threetowners website.

Looking forward to your posts

Alex,

If you word search your own name, both as Alex and Alec, you already have a number of mentions.
