Saltcoats Victoria

Post by mike mccann »

Here is another photo of the " Vics " . This was given to me by Frank Quinn who is in the picture . It must have been taken around 1945/46 as Frank played with Celtic during season 1946/7 .
I'm not sure what the trophies are but the Vics won the Western League in season 1945/6 .
If anyone is interested I can name some of the players in the picture.

The Vics won the Ayrshire League Cup in season 1945/46 (presumably the trophy awared for winning the League as opposed to a knock-out cup competition). They also won the West of Scotland Cup.

Hi Sam, , here is what I can remember .

the players wearing the plain shirts are the first team , so starting at the back here they are left to right :-

Sam Pllu , ( later went to Winton Rovers ) , McGeachie and Ross .

Next row:- O'Rourke (?} , Frank Quinn , " Seagull" McKenna , Harry Leckie and Tommy Cairns .

Front row :- Joe Kirk ( captain ) , Gill and Stewart .

The person beside Sam Pllu is " Sparrow " Alexander , and beside Ross is Willie Walton .

Beside Joe Kirk is Eddie Quinn .

Don't recognise the other players . I suppose some of the civvies would be commitee members etc .

Re nicknames , in the fifties , Winton had a great wee centre forward called McEwan and of course his nickname was " Screwtap " !

I have a pic of Winton in the ealrly fifties which I Will dig out an post .

hi Sarah
Here is photo of Winton Rovers around 1949 . I started following them thext year so can't recall everybody , but here goes .

BACK ROW :-Sam Pllu , ?,?, Tommy Morgan , Puggy Muir and ?

FRONT ROW :- Lawrie , Jackie Thomson , John Reid , Neilly Hawthorne and Willie Kearney .

Any corrections would be welcomed .

Jackie Thomson lived in Saltcoats and up to just a few years ago , could be seen around the town . As I moved away two yeats ago I don't know if he is still alive .

Among the players I watched over the next couple of years were Frew the goalie , Chic Milligan , Willie Scollan , Willie Donnelly, " Screwtap " McEwan , Willie Young , and left wing partnership of Anderson and Cochrane .
Saw them win the Ayrshire Cup at Somerset Park in 1952 ..

Mike,

The team is a bit early for me but I was drawn to the two trees in the Winton School playground. By the time I started there in 1952 there were only two stumps. These inevitably became goal posts. Jackets or jumpers were used at the opposite end.

And without wishing to steal Sarah's thunder she may be interested to know that her brother's 185 appearances for Colchester are recorded.

Mike,

In season 1945/46 Saltcoats Vics beat Cambuslang Rangers 3-1 on 29 June 1946 at Ardeer Recreation ground, Stevenston, in the West of Scotland Cup Final.

The Vics also won the same cup the following season, beating Kilbirnie Ladeside 4-1.
