Could some-one tell me what's the point of the fencing.

John
I'm no expert but I believe sand fences help prevent sand dune erosion by helping the stabilisation of the dunes. They also force the sand to accumulate in the "correct" places.

I'm having trouble getting my head round how an open spar fence can help stabilise soft fine sand. Sorry just can't see it.

Nice photos -BWalsh. Any idea what the boat coming in was as it does not look like a Caledonian MacBrayne boat. Navy / NATO perhaps. Thanks.

Sand fences. Loadsa complicated science in there!

Basically, the fence disrupts the airflow, causing turbulence. Sand particles are carried by the wind. The fence causes the air to flow more slowly on the downwind side, meaning the wind drops the sand, so a dune starts to build up a few yards downwind of the fence.

The fence doesn’t need to be solid, and ideally there will be a gap between the bottom of the spars and the ground.

Snow fences work the same way. Apparently they’re used in parts of the US and Europe to protect roads from snowdrifts. A fence would be built about 50m upwind of the road, which causes the wind to drop its snow just beyond the fence, before it reaches the road.

Quite homesick... :( miss it so much, wind, weather, folks..my wee sis is still in Stevenston, I think! she's not online,or doesn't want me to know! I doubt very much I'll get back again, but it's so fresh in my head I'm there always.
