50 YEARS WITH ARDROSSAN & SALTCOATS HERALD

50 years with Herald June 1967.jpg

" A worker of integrity ", " a craftsman of the highest standard " and " a colleague and friend whom everyone admires " - these were some of the phrases used to describe Mr Alex Goodall, machine room foreman with the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald last Friday when he and his wife were guests of honour at a function held in the Ingledene Hotel, Ardrossan, to mark his completion of 50 years' service with Arthur Guthrie and Sons Ltd.

Presiding over the function, Mr Robert Sproat, general manager and director, introduced Mr F M Johnston, chairman of Arthur Guthrie and Sons Ltd, who on behalf of the Company, presented Mr Goodall with a battery operated lawnmower and a power hedge trimmer, following which Mrs Goodall received a marcasite brooch from Mrs Johnston. " I think, " said Mr Johnston, " that Mr Goodall wears very well,, which is a great tribute not only to his stamina but to the good treatment he has received throughout all these years. "

Mr William Leslie, works manager, called on Mr John Ferrol, apprentice compositor, to present Mr Goodall with a wallet of notes from the staff; and on Miss Lucille Henry to present Mrs Goodall with a bouquet of flowers. " We hope we'll see you around for a long time to come , " said Mr Ferrol to Mr Goodall, congratulations and best wishes to whom were also conveyed by Mr Sproat, Mr Leslie, Mr James Stewart, editor of the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald, Mr J J McCreadie, editor of the Largs and Millport Weekly News, and Mr William Smith, Mr Goodall's deputy.

In expressing his thanks for the gifts, Mr Goodall said : " It seems a long time. But time goes very quickly, especially when you get older. And I have always been very happy in my work. "Recalling the many changes in staff which he had seen during his long period of service, Mr Goodall pointed out that he was not by any means the first employee to have completed 50 or more years with the firm. " I think I am the seventh, " he said. " And many served for 40 years or more . "

Herald retiral June 1972.jpg

One of the longest-serving employees of Messrs Arthur Guthrie & Sons Ltd, Mr David MacMillan, retired last Friday and he and Mrs MacMillan were guests of his colleagues at a presentation ceremony.

Mr MacMillan was a Linotype operator and came from Greenock to join the " Ardrossan Herald " staff in 1935.

At Friday's ceremony Mr John Ferrol, father of the chapel ( shop steward ) presided and handed to Mr MacMillan a sum of money subscribed by his fellow workers, expressing their appreciation of David's companionship and his constant helpfulness.

Miss Rosemary Sloan, of the proof-reading department, presented a bouquet to Mrs MacMillan, and thanking his colleagues for their gifts Mr MacMillan spoke of the pleasure he had enjoyed in working for the firm, while Mrs MacMillan returned her thanks for the friendship shown by her husband's workmates.

On behalf of the editorial staff Mr J Allison praised Mr MacMillan his lively humour and for his careful and expert setting of type, and the general manager of the firm, Mr Robert Sproat, thanked Mr MacMillan for his devoted service and expressed best wishes for a long and happy retirement.

In the absence on holiday of the works manager, Mr William Leslie, his depute, Mr Ian Patrick, paid tribute to Mr MacMillan for his untiring interest in the job and the care he had brought to all aspects of his work.

John Ferrol was the elder brother of my best pal through school - Elizabeth. Met her years later in the staff room of a South Ayrshire primary school. Her dad worked for Burns and Laird in Ardrossan many years ago.
