When we referred to worthies it usually meant odd folk, like 'fearless', and the 'dummy' in Stevenston who terrified many, I suppose as in 'different'?

Morag - we always used worthies as someone of importance or worth. Online dictionary has this ...

WORTHY

noun
plural noun: worthies
a person notable or important in a particular sphere.
"schools governed by local worthies"

"the candidate gained the support of some significant local worthies"

I've not seen Donald McQueen's face for nearly 50 years.
Didn't he drive the Saltcoats Town Council "bucket cairt"?

I guess the dictionary definition of “worthies” and the common usage is different. I always understood it to be “characters” - normally those that liked a drink...

Same here Bruce, not so much the drink, but a wee bit different. Touched, we might have thought.

John Queen stayed in Doon Place in Saltcoats. He had a truck from which he sold lemonade.

John Pollock was a local entertainer who I will remember for the his wonderful impersonation of Charlie Chaplin.
He was in his eighties and was in front of me in Terry Erskine the barbours, all of a sudden Terry turned to me and laughed. Later Terry explained to me that when he asked him what plans he had for the rest of the day John replied 'I'm going across to Canal Court to entertain the Old People.' not bad for somebody in their eighties.
