Margaret Mcpherson and Dugald McLellan

Post by calleytwo »

Ellen I hate to ask but would you have anything on my maternal grandparents, Margaret Mcpherson and Dugald McLellan? Both would have been born in Campbelltown around 1880 or so (Margaret probably nearer 1885). Dugald was blown up on a minesweeper in 1915 and Margaret died around 1935 when she was living in Irvine. Children in order of birth were William, Annabelle, Flora, Margaret, Martha and Mary (my mum).Thank you. Wee Ali

Thank you Ellen - much appreciated. I am not sure about any of them. With Dugald I have a suspicion that it might be the first one, though my mother never mentioned her paternal grandparents, perhaps with good reason. I found that name on the Latter Day Saints web page some years back and it appears the three Mclellan kids mentioned (at least Dugald anyway) were born out of wedlock.I remember finding that about Dugald just before mum died and mentioning that there was a Dugald born to what looked like an unmarried mother round about when her dad was born. Her reply was "it wasnie unusual in Campbelltown in they days". She was reticent to talk about anything that had a whiff of family scandal at the time so I am beginning to think it might have been him - especially with a William and Flora as siblings. Obviously Flora senior must have married a Mr Bryson eventually. As to Margaret - I don't know. Only thing I know about her was she died at the age of 49 before Mum married in 1937 and I think that might have been in 1935/36 so the other Margaret would have been a little too old. I think Mum said she was left a widow at the age of 30 in 1915 so that would tie in with an 1885 date. Again thank you! Wee Ali

Thanks to Irene I now have copies of birth, marriage and death certificates that prove the first Dugald Mclellan was my grandfather. Unfortunately the marriage certificate shows that Margaret's mother was Annie McPherson though father was also a Dugald Mcpherson so the one listed by Ellen is not she. Thank you to the pair of you - a big part of what makes this site so great! Wee Ali

My Name is Hazel and I am Dugald McLellan and Margaret Mitchell McPherson's Great Grandaughter. My gran (your Aunt) was Annabella McLellan, born 5 November 1903. She married William O'Neill (15 June 1928) Please email me at [removed]. I have traced family back to 1844!

There are a few gaps mind you, but, i am currently working on that. I would love to share this info.

Just to let you know Dugald Mclellan's boat Drifter Pelagia was blown up by a mine just off Nab Light House. As far as I am aware they never found his body.

I knew one of the Siblings moved to Australia but wasn't sure who. Flora McLellan I know moved to Canada, I remember meeting her as a child.

My Father's name is William and he would be your cousin. He had two brothers Dugald and John, sadly both have passed away now.

hope to hear from you :-)

Hi Hazel,

I was doing a search on the HMD Pelagia and came across this thread. Dugald was also my great grandfather and his daughter, Flora, was my grandmother. She moved to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in the 1950's.

She acknowledged the Dugald was illegitimate but would add that his father was McNeill of Gigha!

Cheers,

Craig MacPhail

Sorry Craig - I missed this post. I was 8 when I last saw your grandmother but remember her well. A strong intelligent woman. She would have known all the details of Dugald's ancestry. If his father was a local well to do then it would explain many things! Not least being your Great grandmother's determination to bring her daughter's up as respectable and good people. And she succeeded with all of them! Is your father still alive? I believe he did well in the police up there? Your father's cousin William _Hazel's dad) passed away recently. His two cousins John and I are still going here in Australia. Would like to hear more from you. Regards Alistair
