Almost everyone researching family in the three towns, Kilwinning, Irvine and surrounds will have a relative who at one time worked in the "Dinnamite" or "The Factory" as it was locally known. Almost all my ancestors going back to the 1880s worked there including my father, mother and my wife (before I whisked her off to Australia).
I've uploaded an article from "McClure's Magazine" dated 1897 at threetowners.com which should be of interest - it's always nice to get a bit of background into the local situation where family lived.
The article : Ardeer Dynamite Factory 1897

Hi Hughie, our family was the same.
My Father worked there for 40 years, till he died.
My Mother worked there also, only in the canteen , mind you.Me and my 3 sisters worked there as well, although the 2 youngest didn't stay long.
My brother worked there too.
What would a lot of families have done without the " factory " and the doubles the men sometimes worked
Merry Xmas.........Joyce
