34 Quay Street

Hi, I am hoping someone can shed some light on the one person I have not been able to complete my family research on. I have been looking for years for an Annie Christina Murray. She was listed on immigration records and Canadian census as being the daughter of John Murray & Margaret Cornelious Ryans. John Murray born in Stevenston and Margaret Ryans born in Saltcoats, married in Ardrossan. The issue has always been there is no birth record on Scotland's people of an Anne/Annie Christina or Christina Anne/Annie for August 1906. I had thought she had died as a child in Canada until I discovered a marriage record in Fernie BC, Canada also birth record & death cert of her son and death cert of her husband. I also found newspaper clippings of her husband seeking her whereabouts about 4 years after their marriage. She was very elusive and also no living descendants of the rest of the family knew of her existence. I have just spent copious amounts on Scotlands people and have just found a birth certificate of an Elizabeth Murray born August 1906 which is correct and it lists the mother as Catherine Murray (which is the name of one of her sister) Catherine would have been 16 and the other pointer to this is that Annie Christina was born 16 years after the birth of her last sibling which made no sense. So now I have the birth cert and there is also a Canadian Census where the year of birth matches her, but she is recorded as Elizabeth, which I presumed to be a mistake as she had a sister Elizabeth. So my only bit of information to tie me to this birth cert is the address which is listed as 34 Quay Street Saltcoats, and when I search the 1901 Census there appears to be a lot of people recorded with that address? all different families but all on the same census? Does anyone know what that address was? Also of note the mother is listed as being a dynamite worker, and from my research most of the workers were young girls under the age of 20 is that correct? Is there any records which list the workers at a certain time? Thanks in advance, this is a puzzle I have been working on for 10 years now and would love to resolve it.

Thanks for that. I have all of that information and a some of it is incorrect. I have done extensive digging and as I said the only mystery I have is in relation to Annie Christina. I am trying to confirm that she was indeed the daughter of whom she thought was her sister, and was the granddaughter of Margaret Cornelious Ryans and John Murray (my paternal great grandparents). I am trying to determine what was actually at the address in Quay street was a boarding house or a home for the poor? there were multiple families listed at that address in the census. The other thing I am particularly trying to find is any records of the girls who were employed at the dynamite factory.

Thanks again
Marion

Marion,

The building at 34 Quay Street, in line with others which survived longer, would have been what we call a 'tenement', a residential property with a common entry called a 'close', which usually comprised a ground floor, 1st floor, 2nd floor, and maybe even a 3rd or more floors, sometimes with attics, which had family accommodation on each floor. You should therefore concentrate only on the Murray family, the other names you have will have been neighbours all of whom will have shared the same address but probably defined by the likes of 2FR (second floor right) for the sake of post or other deliveries.

Family members may have been employed at Nobel's Explosives Factory at Ardeer, Stevenston. Quay Street is a two minute walk to the railway station where special trains left every day direct to "the factory" where thousands were employed, both men and women.

Marion, photo number 14 shows Quay street about 1900. You can see the tenements Penny Tray mentioned.

Marion,

Can I just satisfy myself that you are aware of the following link which contains local family birth, marriage, and death intimations. I note, for example, the death of a PATRICK CORNELIUS MURRAY, a young Saltcoats man who was killed in a railway accident on the 17th of August 1911. There may or may not be a family link.
