Canal Cottage was mentioned in a previous post as follows. It also appears on old maps as situated off Canal Street, probably in the area that was ultimately Esplanade Cottages.

GLASGOW HERALD
17 NOVEMBER 1916

SALTCOATS TOWN COUNCIL'S LAND PURCHASE

The Saltcoats Town Council has purchased the lands of Saltcoats Campbell from Mr. R. G. A. Robertson-Cuninghame of Auchenharvie for the sum of £6000.

The land consists of 55 acres between the Caledonian and Glasgow and South-Western Railways, and on the south side of the Glasgow and South-West Railway there are 53 acres of land and 52 acres of foreshore - a total of 160 acres,

The land extends between the railways from Canal Cottage to Stevenston Burn, and from Seaview Road to Stevenston Burn on the south of the Glasgow and South-Western Railway.

Annette,

It looks as if the building may originally have been accommodation for the workers of the proposed canal:-

This is from the 1855 survey:
Canal Cottage, Robert Cunninghame Esqr Proprietor.
A neat cottage with garden adjoining occupied by William Kinnear, it is also called by many parties Canalside Cottage and the proprietor is in favor of the latter.
