Ship passanger lists

Post by kaymay » Tue Apr 09, 2019 6:41 pm

I have looked every where online that is free for ship passenger lists for 1900 - 1912 to South Africa. Looking for my great grand father John Campbell Taylor b. 3 Jun 1874 Saltcoats Dynamite worker, emigration to South Africa. He either landed in Cape Town or Durban in the Natal Colony as it was know then.
Do not know if his wife and three sons went with him at the same time or joined him later.
Wife's name Mary Law Stevely b. 8 May 1878 Stevenston - sons James Stevely Taylor b. 3 Apr 1899 Saltcoats, Archibald Taylor b. 28 Jan 1901 Saltcoats and Duncan Taylor b. 29 Nov 1902 Saltcoats.

I did find a passenger list for Mary Law Stevely/ Mrs. Mary Taylor and her three sons leaving South Africa in Dec 1905. From Durban to London on the ship 'Galician" She was running back home where she later gave birth to a daughter Margaret Roy Taylor on the 12 Feb 1906 Saltcoats.

I have not found any passenger list where she and her children returned to South Africa. She must have, for two more children were born in South Africa in Germiston.

Any help please
Thanks

Kafferskraal on the 13 Apr 1943. He AWOL'd a few times. He was admonished for one time then, given 7 Days C.B. on another occasion. Robert's occupation as a civilian was a Lorry driver and handyman.

My research indicates during either late April/early May 1899, a James STEVELY married one Mary ROY at the Saltcoats Town Hall.
Is it possible when she returned to Scotland and having no residence, Mary resided with James and Mary; her parents?? In 1906, Margaret was born and named Margaret Roy TAYLOR.

I assume you restricted your search for her return by 1912 due to a S.A. birth that year? May I suggest searching ALL S.A. ports, as it was not uncommon for cargo vessels to carry passengers, as remains the case even today. Customs records may be your best bet here. Are you searching for her as "Immigrant" or "Resident"?

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald of 16 Feb 1906 carried the Birth Notice of a female TAYLOR apparently born at "Eastfield", Gladstone Road, Saltcoats, father's forename listed as John. No details regarding mother.
