Private John James McMANUS - 51Bn, AIF

Ardrossan-born Private John James McManus 2895 enlisted 19 Sep 1914, age 28 Yrs 8 Mths, at Kingaroy, Queensland. His known family were Mr J McManus (brother) and Mr J McManus (father, deceased). He was noted to be of "Fair Complexion, Blue Eyes, Light Brown Hair, 4 Tattoos - 2 on back of hands, 2 on front of forearms, RC religion, Occupation Sailor". He was discharged during February 1915 but promptly re-enlisted the following month and continued serving throughout the Great War.

Due to many offences, several of which led to two Field Courts Martial, his Performance Record was annotated "Character Bad". An entry in his medical record states "gunshot wound to thigh - Accidental?". Following discharge as "Medically Unfit", which although medically related was unrelated to the gunshot wound, he was awarded 1914/5 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

On 1 August 1918, by Licence, he (36 Yrs) married Ethel Mary OFFARD (22 Yrs) at the West Ham Register Office.
John's last noted address was "No. 8 Ward, Waterfall Sanitorium, Pia, Sydney, NSW" on 9 November 1931. What became of his wife Ethel is not known.

Further research reveals 2895 Private John James McManus died 06 June 1936 and buried at Mareeba Pioneer Cemetery, Costin Street, Mareeba, Queensland.
