Great Grandfather Robert Bell of Saltcoats...

Post by vanessamcg » Thu Aug 23, 2018 2:40 pm

Hello there! I'm searching for the maiden name of my Great Grandmother, Margaret Bell. She was born in 1853 at Belfast, N Ireland, and was married to my great Grandfather Robert Bell of Saltcoats (1849). His parents were Samuel (born Saltcoats, 1819/20) and Janet Bell, who were weavers and lived on Manse Street, Saltcoats (1861 census).

I've been trying to obtain Robert and Margaret's marriage certificate (probably dated between 1867-1872) but their first 3 children were born in Partick (between 1872-1878) ), so they obviously moved out of Saltcoats and may not have married around this area. I'd be extremely grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction!!

National Records of Scotland, Births 1872-1880, County of Lanark, District of Partick, Forenames Robert, Samuel (Robert's Father) and Margaret.

No Births noted for forename of Samuel during period 1872-1880 at Partick.
BELL, MARGARET, F, 1874, Ref 646/3 33
BELL, MARGARET JANE, F, 1875, Ref 646/2 218
BELL, ROBERT, M, 1877, Ref 646/2 685
BELL, MARGARET CAMPBE(LL?) F, 1879, Ref 646/2 1233

Margaret would have been aged ONLY 14 years at 1867. Personally, although I'd start aged 18 years at marriage (1871), I'd favour age 20 years (1872/3).

I believe Birth Extracts record both date and location of parents marriage. If so, that is specific information with which to search for their Marriage Extract which, in turn, will record Margaret's personal particulars.

Hi Vanessa
I'm pretty sure your G-Grandmother's name was Margaret Benson.
I looked at the birth certificate of a Robert Bell born 1877 and found his parents' names and date of marriage. Unfortunately it was a very bad copy but I could read the date and place of marriage:
July 1871 Belfast.
I found the marriage details on the Northern Ireland site:
Robert Bell, 24, and Margaret Benson, 23, married on 19th July 1871. The name of the church was St Annes Cathedral Church of Ireland.
Margaret's age doesn't fit but she probably just added a few years.
You should find more information on Margaret on the GRONI site.
It is never too late to be what you might have been.
