Charles and Theresa Docherty

Post by Colin30Something »

Im looking for any information on Charles and Theresa Docherty (nee McNamara), my great grandparents. Charles was born in Govan around 1901 (he might have been adopted). His parents listed on the wedding certificate were John Walls Docherty and Mary Docherty (nee McElerney). Theresa was born in 1901 in Ardrossan to William McNamara and Eliza Jane McNamara (nee Donnan) According to immigration paperwork, their contact relation was Mrs Catherine McMillan of 6 Union Street, Saltcoats. Charles immigrated to the US in 1923, Theresa followed with their daughter Elsie (born in Ardrossan in 1922). Anybody know them or possibly do I still have relatives in the area? Let me know!

The marriage of Theresa McNamara and Charles Docherty at St. Mary's R.C. Church, Saltcoats, is intimated in the 28 October 1921 edition of the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald.

There will undoubtedly be other family intimations on the same BDM site, which, if you haven't already studied it, is certainly worth a look.

Any relatives of John Walls Docherty here? Born 17 May 1877 in Saltcoats, Died 03 Nov 1955 in Kilmarnock. I'm doing research on my father's family, and I'm running into a wall here. Any help would be much appreciated.

Colin,

Apologies if you already know everything I'm going to refer too but I don't always fully understand these topics and often find them ambiguous.

Firstly, I understand that you're resident in United States of America and may not therefore interpret information at your disposal in the same way Threetowners might. For example, when I read your latest post, I immediately disregarded it because you said that John Walls Docherty was born in Saltcoats in 1877 and died in Kilmarnock in 1955, 78 years later. I assumed therefore that somewhere in between times John had moved to Kilmarnock, set up home there, and died there, and since I don't know Kilmarnock very well, and don't know anyone who lives there, I switched off.

Later in the day I thought to myself, "I bet John was still a resident of Saltcoats, took unwell there, was conveyed to KILMARNOCK Infirmary, where all serious Threetown medical cases were taken in 1955, and died there." Reference to Kilmarnock therefore might be misleading.

I then referred to the Ardrossan & Saltcoats BDM database, which I previously recommended to you, and reinforced my thinking by noting that John seems to have been living at 3 Arthur Street, Saltcoats at the time of his death.

Can I ask you to clarify whether you don't know who John's relatives are or if you know who they are by name but can't trace them.

Somebody, presumably a family member, intimated John's death in the 11/11/1955 edition of the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald. The database gives only basic information in this respect but the actual newspaper, copies of which are available in or near the Threetowns (where unfortunately I am no longer resident), usually names the wife, son or sons, and/or daughter or daughters making the intimation, and I would be looking to access that newspaper or have someone access it on my behalf to give me a positive lead.
Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.

According to Ancestry tree .
Berdard Docherty D13 MARCH 1883 • Govan, Lanark, Scotland
Marjory D13 SEPTEMBER 1902 • Old Ardrossan, Ayr, Scotland, United Kingdom
Tree says b c1820 Donegal, Ireland

Edit-Any of the births after 1855 should have parents marr.details on it, Best ones are 1855-1860

Edit-There is a Bernard Docherty death 1883 Govan.I would also try for a poor relief record in wifes name ,as the Glasgow Poor relief records are very good.It can all be done online.
