LImelikn Street STEVENSTON

Post by martiboy »

It seems my great grandparents lived in limelin street before moving to shore rioad. In my childhood it was flattened and now its rebuilt. Anyone able to advise when it was demolished. Even better when the lime likns were closed too? M

My family also arrived in Limekilns Road about 1898, before moving to Shore Road too.

They were involved with Foundries in Glasgow before moving to Stevenston.

On the map of Stevenston/Ardeer of 1896, it shows :

Ardeer Foundry : seaward side of Portland Place
Stevenston Iron Works : beyond Ardeer Foundry just before the Caley Line crossed the Glasgow & South Western tracks (about the area of the current council yard and the waste ground beyond)

Eagle Foundry : at the end of Warner St beside the main railway

Limeworks : beyond Eagle Foundry, beside the main railway, but accessed from the middle of Carment Dr. via a track(which became Limekilns Rd). The original housing must have been built about 1897-99 approx.

My family went on to live in Portland Place in the houses on the opposite side from the Ardeer Foundry, for whom my grandfather worked.

I`ve been unable to find much about the Foundries, nor have been able to track any photos of Portland Place houses or foundry.
