World War 1 casualties - missing details

Post by geomacintyre »

In the update on World War 1 Casualties, I said there were names on the war memorials in Ardrossan, Saltcoats, Stevenston and Kilwinning that I had no further details for and that I would seek the assistance of the ThreeTowners to complete the list as far as possible.

Here is my appeal for help.

Although there are no details for Carlo Cavani on the CWGC website, the A&S Herald carried this report on December 1, 1916:

“As previously reported, Carlo Cavani, Italian Infantry, has died of a fever in a field hospital. Previous to joining the Italian Army, he resided at 17 Dockhead Street, Saltcoats, and carried on business as an ice cream merchant at shops there and in Chapelwell Street.

“A solemn Requiem Mass was sung on Thursday last in St Mary's Church, Saltcoats, for the repose of Carlo Cavani. The church was crowded. Father Gallagher was the priest, and Father Diamond, Dalry, was the Deacon, and Father Power, sub deacon. The music of the Mass was rendered by a choir of priests under the direction of Father Clark, of Paisley. A motet, ‘Jesu Salvator Mundi’, was exquisitely rendered by Father Clark after the consecration. The catafalque in front of the high altar was draped with the Italian flag.”

Saltcoats War memorial lists the Rev James B Orr. Neither soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914 to 1919 nor the Commonwealth War Graves Commission list a Rev Orr, but both list Captain James Barbour Orr, 4th Bn Royal Scots Fusiliers, who died on July 31, 1917 and is commemorated on Panel 19 and 33 on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald Intimations on Ayrshire-roots.co.uk has a marriage intimation in the edition of March 2, 1917 for James B Orr and Joan Livingstone Young at Saltcoats and Ardrossan Free Church.

Only five months later, the same website carries a death notice in the August 10, edition of the A&S Herald for James B Orr, husband of Joan Livingstone Young. This is followed on August 24 by and acknowledgement by “Mrs” of Glendye, Stevenston, and another from Winton Circus, Saltcoats.

The Great War Forum carries the following post:

“My grandfather, William Orr, who was in the 6/7 and then 1st Royal Scots Fusiliers left memoirs in which he mentions very briefly someone who appears to be James Barbour Orr.

“Writing about his time in training at Catterick Camp in 1916, he writes listing some people who were later to die in the War, ‘A namesake of my own, J B Orr, a clergyman in private life, now a combatant officer, who later made the supreme sacrifice in France.’

“He says that some of these officers were recuperating after having been wounded.”

Based on this, I have added him to the list.

While looking for details of John A Murphy, I came across a death “in action” notice “intimation in The A&S Herald of December 8, 1916 for Michael Murphy, “foster son of Charles & Annie McCulloch, Saltcoats”. No other details were available.

The names that I have been unable to trace details for and would appreciate help with are:

George, I found some information on two of the people you mentioned:

George Walker Taylor died on 30 Jan 1919 in hospital at Riccarton aged 28. Royal Field Artillery. Reg. No. 52446.
Alexander Scobie died 19 Sep 1918 23 Chapelwell St. Saltcoats aged 32. Army pensioner. No regiment given.

I found a James Brophy but not John.
Private 5th Battalion HLI. Reg. No. 201467. Died of wounds 03 Dec 1917 aged 37 in Egypt. Maybe the army made a mistake when they registered his death.

As a wee off topic a bit, my grampa went to register his newborn son and that was the last gran saw of him for a few years. Apparently he enlisted. A few years later he came to the door and the son opened it scowling 'who are you?' Lol!
