Forgot to mention that the next map after Ardeer (Irvine) shows Ayr airfield (PDF).

When I was coming and going over the sandy hills to St. Johns in the late '40's and early '50's, there was a shell kicking around there for years. We kids, picked it up and carried it around. We didn't actually play with it as such. What could you do with a round lump of metal with one flat end and a pointy end at the other? As I remember it, it was originally found in the air-raid shelter in the sandy hills at the back of Sanny Frew's coal yard. I remember it as about a foot long with a diameter of maybe three inches. It was very heavy.bonzo wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2020 5:46 pm I wonder where this came from?

I wonder if this shell found its way from the hills to Auchenharvie. That would only be a five minute walk away.
Maybe the authorities might be interested in this information.
I'd be interested to know it it was live, and we were puting our lives ar risk handling the thing. We were totally unaware of any feeling of danger at the time

Yesterday yet another famous footballer died with SLA. Pietro Anastasi, former Juventus centrehalf and Italian National team player from the late 60's to 1981. He was just 72. After suffering for two years he asked for the injection to end his life. How sad.glenshena wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2019 7:41 amI seem to remember Jimmy Johnsone died of SLA. Alzheimers, Dementia, SLA. I'm in devil's advocate mode today.
Alzheimers is a dreadful disease. I've had several personal experiences of friends and relatives with it.
However, I'm wondering about the current hype about the relationship between footballers and Alzheimers.
There are an awful lot of old footballers about, and that's talking about ex-profs. If you add all the thousands of amateurs who played regularly for years at a good level, we're looking at an awful lot of ex-footballers, and not a whole lot of Alzheimers cases.
I'd like to see some relative statistics relating to various types of work/careers and the incidence of Alzheimers.
I remember, years ago, every year at the bank holidays, the papers were full of the amount of deaths and injuries on the roads over the holiday weekend. When somebody took the trouble to compare them with normal weekends, there was very little difference.
Just a thought, but Harold Wilson and Margaret Thatcher both developed the disease, and I don't think they were heading many footballs.
Oh, and by-the-way, there are not a lot of ex-prime ministers about.
A curious JD.

Footballs are much better nowadays not like the old bladder type that absorbed water. Terrible to kick never mind head.
