While I was growing up and watching football I remember that the word 'shy' was used as a throw in off the side lines in football. I often wondered if it was still used.

Heard an old expression today, ' they told me not to be so pernikety' meaning overly precise.

Here's one; 'cloaking.'
We used it as boys when out collecting birds eggs. If the chick was already developing and you could not blow the egg empty, it was cloaking.

Re: Words we used
I remember my dad using the 'cloaking' expression when one of his hens would be sitting on a fertile egg in the nesting box. He also used to have dummy eggs in the boxes, said to entice the hens to lay - China eggs he called them. Had me bamboozled as a wee boy when I gathered them along with the real eggs.

When I was a kid I remember this nasty piece of work who had a coots egg and he shook it and said it was scudid by which he meant cloakin.
