Jas & I bought a little Standard 10, OS 9610 in 1965 50 pounds, from a couple of 'worthies' mechanics who had a workshop at the bottom of the Rec (turned left, along there somewhere) He had no licience at the time and they said just to get in it. Gave him a demonstration of how the gears worked and off we went up New Street. Gees we were terrified we bumped into Sgt James. They must have has some laugh when we left.

My first car was a 1972 Skoda S110L which I bought in 1975 & had until 1980 when I purchased my 2nd car - a 1974 Triumph 2500TC (manual/overdrive). The Skoda was very comfortable but with only an 1100cc rear engine was a bit under-powered for New Zealand's hilly terrain. I used to average around 41m.p.g. The most I got from the Triumph was 35m.p.g.

Some time after this was taken Dad repainted the Skoda with a white roof & a dark green body. Above the Skoda badge on the front is a Scotland badge I bought in Selkirk when back in Scotland in 1974.

First car I had was a Mazda Station Wagon. Didn't have it too long when I backed out the garage one day, and when I got out on the drive-way....there was no door on the drivers side  .There I go telling on myself  . Thirty years later I still don't know what happened. My husband (Saint that he is) just said "if your okay, thats all that matters, we can get the car fixed" apart from my pride, I was okay. Had that car for about 5 years, and hated to trade it in.

I've never myself owned or even driven a car, , but our family's first car was a dark green Morris Minor bought in the late fifties. I still recall the number, but I'll have to keep that to myself because I've used it as my 3T password!

At first this precious vehicle was kept when not in use in a lock-up at Mr.McCully's garage, just round the corner from Saltcoats Public; he had a whole row of them for hire then I think. Later our next-door neighbour's building firm put up a pair of garages for our two houses at the bottom of the gardens. Since I haven't a picture of Our First Car to show here, because the only one I've got is a slide, here's one of Our First Garage instead, and you can imagine the car sitting inside it....

Members( especially those who haven't taken note of where I used to live ) may like to amuse themselves working out exactly where this picture was taken.

Was it behind the Baptist Church (once South Beach parish church)?

Meekan is right , it is indeed the Baptist Church, and I think the other building at the back was the church hall. From looking at the aerial photos I believe these garages are still there; I was rather proud of them when they were put up , by far the best in the lane I thought!

My first car I bought myself was proud of even though it had lots of problems was a green mini countryman, I loved that car, I washed it polished it kept it for 2 years then sold it for £120.
