What are Paramedics worth?

Post by Jim McCreadie »

A very recent edition of The Scottish Sun reported two paramedics, while attending a 999 call during July last year in Wolverhampton, were attacked by a man brandishing kitchen knives. Both were left with gaping wounds. The female was stabbed in the chest, inches from her heart, suffering a punctured lung while the male suffered a slashing back wound while protecting his fellow paramedic. Their attacker was locked up for nine years at Wolverhampton Crown Court after admitting two counts of wounding with intent.
Meanwhile, BBC News reports two on-duty Devon and Cornwall Police officers were stabbed in what was described as a "frenzied" attack in Princetown. While both officers were taken to hospital, their injuries were not deemed life-threatening. A 60-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and a knife seized.
As the area of the female paramedic's wound was in close proximity to her heart and arteries, it can readily be argued her death was a distinct possibility, yet the attacker was charged with "wounding with intent". In the instance of the Police officers who suffered what were described as non life-threatening injuries, the perpetrator was arrested on suspicion of "attempted murder".
What message does this difference convey to Paramedics? Are they viewed as less than Police Officers?
