Poundworld In Administration

Post by Vivc113 »

Poundworld now in administration. Loads of jobs set to go in Ayr.

What does it say about our economy when a mega budget shop goes.

Opinions please.

Was in a POUNDLAND shop the other day, it was selling jeans, tops etc. Poundstretcher was the same. These shops must be in trouble when selling goods over a tenner...

In reality Viv it should say that more folk are now financially better off and there's now no real demand for the stuff on offer from these type of store's.
I doubt if the truth will be anywhere near as simple as that though. :)

So this is why toons are littered with charity shops in Ayrshire - because we are all so much better off.

I read somewhere that some empty shops should be converted to housing.

I’m not sure about north Ayrshire but I know south Ayrshire haven’t lowered their commercial rates on their High Street/sandgate shopping area so, small businesses just can’t afford high rents/ high rates whereas charity shops are exempt from rates and are usually given the shop for a peppercorn rent.

I think one of the main reasons for this company going into liquidation is the heavy competition in this market. As well as Poundworld, we have 2 Poundland shops and a huge B & M in Ayr, and B & M have just opened in Prestwick Main Street - overkill ...

I think you've misunderstood me a wee bit there Viv.
My point was that if the demand for these type of store's is on the wane, then that statistic itself should signify that folk in general are a bit better off in financial term's nowaday's ... there's obviously a lot more to it than that though.
BTW, 'Bargain B's' at the Grange corner is set to close at the end of this week.

I agree Meg.
Also, for me there's far too many trying to copy someone else's successful business model, then liquidate at the drop of a hat - with a big fat wedge in their back pocket - when the going inevitably get's tough.

Interesting.

Topic was up for discussion on radio 2 today, 1230 until 1 pm. Worth a listen again.

As you say, Meg, opinion was too many bargain stores around.

Another point that came in was the low value of the pound, and the shops actually struggling to buy in goods themselves (!!)

Heard about Bargain B. Well, actually spotted on FB. That one came out of nowhere. 😠

Lucky there is Key Store and Post Office.

Did notice recently a failure to re-stock at Bargain B. When you would go for something, it was never there. Happened to me a few times.
