Don't berate Starkey. He is a considerable intellect. I am originally from Kilmarnock, a town much associated with Rabbie. In the 1960s the then Soviet Socialist Republic cooncil, eliminated all traces of the bard, in the name of progress. The progress reduced a fine town centre to an Albanian backwater abortion. Anywhere in England if Willie Shakespeare had stopped for a pee, would now be a shrine. Look closer to home for blame.

Not plagiarism, but of writing doggerel, (naive rhyming verse).
As I said, I think he is an arrogant prat, who, admittedly has a brain the size of the solar system, but has not the wit to see the difference between simplicity and naiveté.

I never saw the definition of doggerel until now, but for SOME of Burns' stuff - intentionally simple or not - you have to admit...

I must confess that I made that definition up on the hoof.
The Concise Oxford Dictionary has, 'poor or trivial verse.'

I can agree with you about some of his work, but bear in mind, he did make a fair bit of off-the-cuff things in reaction to situations.
I won't hear a single word against the man, not even from a brain the size of the solar system. I am one of his greatest fans.
I am in awe of PT's knowledge of him.

While I respect your opinion , and the right to express same .i think that you will find that it is at odds with the international literary community. The man is an acknowledged genius.
