favourite Christmas song

Post by 5siamese7 »

For me even when I was a wee boy, its I saw Three ships come sailing in. The music is so lovely and also it meant that goodies had been brought in and that folks' loved ones had come home safely.

Not usually a fan of solo Christmas songs, but will make an exception for "Have Yourself a Merry..." by James Taylor, which is on Youtube. The line "until then we'll just have to muddle through somehow" was changed to the nonsensical "hang a shining star on every bough" by no less than Frank Sinatra himself, who thought the original was too depressing.

On a related note, it occurred to me a few years back that there were no genuinely Scottish Christmas Carols, and so we were all taught what's a peculiarly English/Anglican tradition - Ding Dong Merrily, The Holly & The Ivy, etc..
I looked back at the hymn/carol books we used in school and there was a Scottish carol right there, but which no teacher ever used in all my primary & secondary school years. It's from the 15th century, and partly in Latin, but it's a jaunty reel that wouldn't be out of place at a ceilidh - Rorate Caeli Desuper

If asked around July I would say kids singing Away in a Manger, however after three weeks of rehearsals of Nativity play, Christmas show and Christmas parties - I really don’t like any Christmas songs

Oh Come All Ye Faithfull, sang with descant though, is an all time favourite.

Two beautifully romantic songs, especially if sung by Andy Williams.
