Did not know.

He did not do his usual jumping up onto my arm.

I saw fear in his eyes as the dark was descending, but he was still hungry.

I don't think bread is too good for birds, buy some bird seed instead. Oh I know, we all grew up with tossing leftover bread out for the birds and they ate it, but as for us, empty calories mostly. My daughter works in a local bakery and the difference in the bread she occasionally brings home compared to supermarket brands is unreal. I have a bird feeder and a hummingbird feeder, pleasure to watch them.

I received a Christmas card from Australia today with a photo of a little bird called Kookaburra. It has blue and brown wings and a blue tail and a long beak. (Perhaps they don't have red robins in Australia!) When it chirps it makes a laughing sound, and when there are a lot of them chirping together in the trees they say it is a sign of rain coming. Wonder if it's true?

Hi Jean,
I captured the image below some years ago. Often see them on the golf courses where they can't help but have a few laughs as you might imagine.

True story: Number two son, Jamie, was playing in the final of the Centenary of Australian Amateur Golf Championship at Royal Sydney G.C. some years ago. Near the end of the thirty-six hole match play event his opponent had a tricky putt - just then a group of Kookaburras started laughing. Damn, he stood back till they stopped and holed it and eventually won the tournament 2-1. Very proud of our boy as you can imagine. :)

Oh yes! And Kookaburras love killing snakes - google it.

A bird that is very common in OZ and they have adapted well to being near humans.

Jeez louise, Viv, buy some bird seed! Bread is not good for them, causes bloat when they then drink water, oh they'll eat it happily enough.

Wondering what folk think of this one.

A new bird has arrived. Calling it "Honey". Got it feeding from my hand. However it is having nights sleeping outside the house on the light outside, where it could be spotted by cats. It is not doing this every night, but it is odd behaviour (??)

Found it outside at 0630 hours today.

The Kookaburra is a member of the kingfisher family. We had a few kookaburras visit us when we lived up in Heathmont. They used to sit in a row on our decking rail. In the mating season they would fly at their reflections on the dining room window. Scared the hell out of me many a time.
We ended up putting a big paper cut out of superman on the glass to stop them seeing their reflections.
