The Ship Inn
What a lovely pub this is. Built in 1567 it is Irvine's oldest pub with lovely food n staff.

It's always been a big part of the ship's menu no chips. They did open a fish and chip restaurant up the stairs don't know if it's still on the go.

Scrap that they have been selling chips for the past year.

Re: The Ship Inn
On one of my visits up to Ayrshire my friend Anne & her husband Robert took me to the Ship for a meal. Must say it was lovely, so it's a visit again from me next time we are up.
Re: The Ship Inn
My daughter and her family are just back from 5 days in Saltcoats, and although they had bad weather the whole time, they said the highlight of their trip was a chance visit to the Ship Inn. They were visiting the Maritime Museum and then discovered the restaurant nearby and were so impressed and enthusiastic about the place and the food. She said she's been coming to Saltcoats for 40 years and never knew the place existed. She said its a lovely aera. My SIL said this was the kind of place he always wanted to go to! He really enjoyed his meal. So now it's a must for me too, I've never been, but my next trip will definitely include a visit.

We were last in there when we were winching back around 1963 with friends from Irvine. Nice then too!

Re: The Ship Inn
When my dad worked ICI boats he'd often harbour at Irvine and took watch duty. Mum would take my sis and I over, legged it, she'd spend time with him and sis and I were harbour rats. I remember the Ship Inn, don't remember if we ever ate there, probably not, but mibbe a glass was raised before the trek home

Re: The Ship Inn
Maybe social historians out there can take this up...
The Ship - many centuries old, civilised, good food - is the type of place that's like the proverbial hen's teeth in Scotland but found absolutely everywhere in England.
Why is that?
Was stone too expensive, or timber too scarce, or were old buildings just knocked down to make way for new ones?

The last time I was in - admittedly a few years ago - it was being run by Ian Jardine an ex Partick Thisle (and Irvine Vics) player.
